This community is particularly popular when it comes to outdoor amenities, particularly fishing and sailing.

If you’re in the market for a new home in the Greater Minneapolis area, you should consider checking out Lake Calhoun.

The Founding of Lake Calhoun

This lake was actually called “Mde Maka Ska” by the Dakota before the European Settlers ever discovered it. That name translates to “White Earth Lake.”

Later, settlers would name it after the Dakota word, Medoza, which means "Loon Lake."

Then United States Secretary of War John C. Calhoun sent the army to survey the area around 1817.

Calhoun had authorized the construction of a fort in the area. Those surveyors that were sent by Calhoun ultimately named the lake in his honor.
