Lake Harriet Has a Ton to Offer Minneapolis Area Buyers!

Located in the southwest part of Minneapolis (just south of Lake Calhoun and north of Minnehaha Creek), Lake Harriet is a gorgeous place to call home.

Surrounded by parkland, this community offers its residents gorgeous vistas every time they look out the window of their well-built single-family home.

If you’re in the market for a Minneapolis area home for sale, you should consider checking out Lake Harriet.

A Little Background on This Community

Lake Harriet was originally named for Harriet Lovejoy, who lived with her husband at Fort Snelling.

The two relocated to the area in 1819.

Although Colonel William S. King owned the lake for many years, the lake and the surrounding land was ultimately donated to Minneapolis in 1885.

The lake had been previously called “Mde Unma,” which means “other lake,” by the Dakota people.

What All Minnesota Buyers Should Know about Lake Harriet

This lake covers an area of 335 acres, making it a popular (and sizable) attraction for recreational sports.

Some of the amenities and sports you can enjoy at this Minnesota lake include:

  • Sailing
  • Two beaches
  • A system of bicycle and pedestrian trails
  • And more!

Meanwhile, the north end of the lake also has a bandshell, which is great during the summer months when concerts are held.

There’s even a preserved section of the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line that runs between Lake Calhoun and the west side of Lake Harriet.

And here’s a fun fact: On the walking path near where Queen Avenue T's into the perimeter drive around Harriet Lake, there is an "elf house" carved into the base of an ash tree.

For many years, one could leave a letter for the elf and find a response letter within a few days. During the winter season, the elf door is shut and a plank appears, which states that the elf has "moved to his castle in the east." It reopens around springtime.

Looking for a bigger excursion? When you live at Lake Harriet, you’ll enjoy plenty of additional recreational options outside of the lake as well.

For instance, the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport as well as various other parks are located close by. These parks include Lyndale Park, the Thomas Sadler Roberts bird sanctuary and the Peace Garden.
